Protect your home from freezing!
Here are some helpful hints for new homeowners (and good reminders for those who have had their houses a long time) to help keep your house protected during freezing weather
•
Remove, drain, and store hoses used outside
•
Turn off and drain sprinkler systems
•
Wrap any exposed outdoor pipes
•
If you are going away for an extended period of time, do leave the heat on in your home, but set it to 55 degrees (or warmer if you choose)
•
Water expands as it freezes, allowing the potential of busted water pipes. If you are in an area that freezes, make sure to drain outside hose bibs and consider allowing your faucets to drip to keep the water moving. Even this slow motion helps to prevent freezing. This freezing usually occurs when temperatures are below 20 degrees, but they CAN happen at higher temperatures.
•
If you do discover that your pipes are frozen, DO NOT WAIT until they bust! Take measures to thaw them safely or call a plumber to solve the problem immediately
•
If a pipe does burst, turn off the water at the main shut-off valve and leave it off until all repairs are completed
•
Rock Salt can be used to melt ice but also to help gain traction on slippery areas such as outdoor stairs, sidewalks, or driveways
Stay warm and safe this winter!
