6 Design Cues to Make Your Home Cozier This Season

The fall and winter months are approaching, which means it's time to cozy up your home. If it's cold out, you'll be looking for ways to stay warm. And even those in warmer regions have an emotional tie to home and hearth during this time of short days and long nights  Make sure your home design transitions with the weather and time of year. Keep your home snug, pleasant and inviting for guests using these six design cues.

#1: Turn Up the Heat—Figuratively and Literally

What's cozier than a fire? Build yourself and your guests a fire to light up the room and keep your toes warm. The crackling sound the fire makes will relax you and your guests and will become the focal point of the room, making it cozier and more inviting for everyone in your home. Even an artificial flame can set the right mood.

#2: Bundle Up

Toss a throw on your couch to add extra warmth for your guests. Drape a textured throw over the arm of your sofa or the foot of your bed to offer your guests something to wrap up in to stay cozy and warm in your home. Not only is a comfy throw cozy, it also livens up the room and adds decoration. Choose throws that are a warm color to help your design transition to fall and winter.

#3: Cover the Floor

Keep your feet warm and comfortable by adding rugs to your floor. There's nothing comfortable about walking in your bare feet on a hard floor, so add rugs in as many rooms as possible. Choose rugs that have complementary patterns and colors to accent your home's design. If you don't want to break the bank, try searching for used rugs.

#4: Pack on the Pillows

Layer textured pillows on your couches and your bed to cozy up your seating. Knitted throw pillows and textured throw pillows will bring your living room and bedroom into the fall and winter seasons and create a cozy atmosphere for guests. You can knit the pillows yourself or purchase them. Dark orange, mustard yellow, tans, browns and grays are great color choices for throw pillows for the colder months.

#5: Double Up Window Treatments

Layer your curtains and window treatments to create a cozy look and to help keep cold air from coming in through the windows. (It also keeps out the sun for days when you're sleeping in!) Install a double drapery rod and hang under-curtains made from whatever material you choose. Then, hang lined draperies or curtains on the other rod to double up your window treatments. If you like the sleeker look, strip the windows back down to the shades or shutters once it gets warmer.

#6 Light Up Your Home

Light as many candles as possible in your home. Fill the air with sweet fall and winter scents and give your home a cozy glow. Candles are a great cost-effective way to give your home a snug and warm look.

Consider these tips for a cozy home this winter season. What are you doing to transition your home decor during this time of year?
