Airport turns runways over to dogs for Mutt Strut

HOUSTON CHRONICLE

Feb. 27, 2010, 9:59PM

George Bush Intercontinental Airport will go to the dogs next Saturday as thousands of canines and canine-lovers gather for the Houston SPCA's annual Mutt Strut and Runway Race.

Last year, the event attracted 2,000 people and 1,500 dogs and brought the animal welfare agency $330,000 in revenue, said Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokeswoman Meera Nandlal.

The event will feature a 5K race for runners, walkers and wheelchair contestants and a noncompetitive Mutt Strut. Both will begin at 8 a.m. In addition, costume and dog and owner look alike contests will be held. Music, food and children's activities also will be available.

SPCA President Patricia Mercer lauded the Houston Airport System for its cooperation in the event. “This one-of-a-kind event helps give Houston's homeless, abused and neglected animals a second chance at life, and we are proud of our partnership with the Houston Airport System,” she said.
