Many homeowners having mortgage trouble

A recent poll finds that while many homeowners are still having trouble making their monthly mortgage payments, the number people having difficulties has fallen.
According to a survey by
Harris Interactive, 22 percent of people with mortgages say they are having trouble making their payments, and a full 7 percent say they are currently having with "a great deal of difficulty" paying off the loan.
While those numbers may be somewhat startling, it actually represents an improvement compared to last year, when 29 percent of mortgage holders said they had issues with their loan, and 11 percent had a great deal of trouble.
The survey also found that 21 percent of homeowners feel they are are currently underwater - stuck paying off loans worth more than their home's value. Eight percent say their homes are now worth "a lot less" than the remaining balance on the loan.
However, trends involving underwater homes and falling home prices have had a lesser impact on Houston homes. CoreLogic says that at the end of last year, just 10.4 percent of Texas homes were underwater, compared to more than 23 percent nationwide.
