Americans remain positive about homeownership

Despite the recent struggles of the housing market nationwide, a national poll by Allstate and National Journal finds that the vast majority of homeowners feel buying a home is a good decision.
According to the survey, nearly 90 percent of homeowners said they would buy their house again, and 70 percent said they'd recommend the long-term investment potential of housing to family or friends. Most Americans - 63 percent - also believed the current housing crisis would improve in the coming years.
"Homeownership is viewed positively by the vast majority of Americans as both a place to raise a family and a sound investment," said Thomas J. Wilson, Allstate chairman, president and CEO.
Just 27 percent of respondents said homeownership was too risky an investment. In addition, more people said "buying a home" was the best investment, which earned more votes than saving money in the bank or the stock market.
According to the Federal Housing Finance Agency, despite the recent recession, home values have gained an average of 3.2 percent each year since 1991.
