Hi,

May 15th is the deadline or 30 days after the printed date of the notice whichever is LATER

Property taxes pay for services like education, transportation, libraries and parks. They help to fund both federal and state governments. Thank you teachers, bus services, librarians, fire fighters, EMS, and the parks we love to go to!

All in all, property taxes are a set percentage of the assessment value of the property using the mill levy approach. The mill levy means the percentage tax rate applied to your property's valuation. One mill is one cent, so if your tax is one mill and your property is valued at $100, the tax would be $1. Various government entities calculate their levies separately depending on what they need. The mill rate applied to your property assessment is the total of these levies. In many areas, the city, county and school district all have separate authority to tax real estate inside its jurisdiction.

Attached is the link that helps explain the easier way to file instead of mailing in. You don't have to have everything together just get in the system and get on the schedule. They will mail you out information relating to your request to protest. Many people protest for various reasons the biggest reason is to..you guessed it, save money. The county does what we call a drive by appraisal. They have no idea what your property condition is like inside unless you tell them good or bad.

I remember purchasing a foreclosure home years ago that needed work and was in decent shape but not upgraded at all. The house was appraised by the county at like $60,000 and of course taxes are based on what the county feels your home is worth without sending an actual appraiser inside to check it out. Long story short, I protested my taxes and came prepared during my appointment with pictures of work that needed to be done, what I bought it for etc. The meeting lasted about 30 min. The value of that home stayed very low for about 2 to 3 years ($30,000). Check and see what homes similar to your home sold for and compare (check with your Realtor). There are also companies that will assist you as well protest at no charge unless they actually get your taxes lowered then you pay a percentage of what they saved you back to them. Deal or no deal?

Many people protest to raise the value especially if they are getting ready to sell. Many protest their taxes to lower the value especially if they plan on staying. If you are having a financial hardship or sudden life change there is paperwork that can be filled out for that as well. Check with the appraisal district. See link below! Now you can upload your docs to the system no later than 5 days after filing your iProtest. Helpful links below. Good luck!
