If you’re trying to decide between Houston, Dallas, or Austin, one of the biggest factors is cost of living. While each city has its own personality and lifestyle, what you’ll actually spend day to day can make a big difference. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you compare.

Housing Costs

Houston is hands down the most affordable of the three. You’ll generally get more square footage and newer homes at lower prices, which is why so many first-time buyers and families choose to settle here. Dallas runs a little higher—especially in popular neighborhoods but you can still find solid value in the suburbs. Austin is the most expensive, driven by its booming tech industry and national popularity, which keeps housing demand high and prices climbing.

Everyday Expenses

When it comes to groceries, utilities, and transportation, Houston and Dallas are fairly similar. Houston is a bit more car-dependent, while Dallas offers slightly better public transit options. Austin tends to cost more across the board—whether that’s gas, parking, or a night out on the town. That said, Houston shines with its food scene, offering incredible dining at a fraction of what you’d spend in Austin.

Job Opportunities

Each city has its strengths. Houston leads in energy, healthcare, and aerospace. Dallas is a hub for finance, business, and tech. Austin attracts the most attention for its growing tech scene and higher salaries—but keep in mind those higher paychecks are often offset by higher living costs.

My Take

  • Looking for affordability and value? Houston is your best bet.

  • Want balance between cost and big-city lifestyle? Dallas hits the sweet spot.

  • Chasing the tech scene or higher salaries? Austin could be worth it if you’re ready for the higher price tag.

The good news? No matter which city you choose, Texas still offers a lower overall cost of living compared to many other U.S. metro areas, plus the benefit of no state income tax.
