If safety is high on your list when looking for a place to call home in Houston, you’re in luck. Our city has several communities where low crime rates, friendly neighbors, and peace of mind go hand in hand. Based on recent data and my own local insights, here are some of Houston’s safest and most sought-after neighborhoods.

1. Bunker Hill Village

Tucked away in West Houston, Bunker Hill Village offers an upscale, quiet atmosphere with a crime rate about 81% lower than the Texas average. Wide, tree-lined streets, well-kept homes, and an active local police presence make it a dream spot for families looking for security and serenity.

2. Hunters Creek Village

Another West Houston gem, Hunters Creek Village is known for its peaceful streets, beautiful homes, and excellent schools. Crime rates here are roughly 75% below the state average, making it a top choice for buyers who value safety and community.

3. Friendswood

Just south of central Houston, Friendswood blends small-town charm with big-city access. With crime rates 74% lower than the Texas average and strong neighborhood watch programs, it’s an ideal setting for families who want a true sense of community.

4. Spring Branch North

Family-friendly and full of green space, Spring Branch North boasts high-performing schools and crime rates about 61% lower than the state average. It’s a neighborhood where kids ride bikes, neighbors wave hello, and parks are part of everyday life.

5. Midtown

For those who want to be in the heart of the action without sacrificing safety, Midtown is a perfect fit. With crime around 60% lower than Houston’s average, you can enjoy its walkable streets, restaurants, coffee shops, and art scene with confidence.

6. Sugar Land

A Houston-area favorite, Sugar Land is consistently ranked among the best places to live in the country. It offers top-tier schools, plentiful amenities, and crime rates about 58% below the state average — all just a short drive from Houston.

7. West University Place

Known locally as “West U,” this charming neighborhood has the feel of a small town right next to the city. With low property crime and an overall crime rate 46% lower than the Texas average, it’s perfect for those who value both safety and convenience.

8. Galena Park

Galena Park offers a quieter pace of life with crime rates about 45% below the state average. Its walkable streets and easy access to Houston make it a great blend of suburban peace and urban convenience.

9. Kingwood

Nicknamed the “Livable Forest,” Kingwood is a master-planned community filled with greenbelt trails and parks. Crime here is about 37% lower than the Houston average, making it a nature lover’s paradise that’s also family-friendly.

10. Bellaire

Bellaire’s tree-shaded streets, highly rated schools, and welcoming vibe have made it a longtime favorite. Crime is about 22% below Houston’s average, and violent crime is 56% lower than the national average — making it as safe as it is beautiful.

Honorable Mentions

  • River Oaks – One of Houston’s most prestigious neighborhoods, with private security patrols.

  • Willowbend – A warm, welcoming Southwest neighborhood with low crime and a friendly atmosphere.

  • Tanglewood – Affluent and secure, with off-duty officers helping patrol the area.

While no city is crime-free, Houston has been making positive strides. In 2023, homicide rates dropped by 20%, and violent crime (excluding rape) continued to decline into 2024. Still, a recent survey found that 77% of Houstonians are more cautious about going out at night, and over half have moved to neighborhoods they feel are safer. It’s a reminder that where you choose to live matters and the communities above are leading the way in peace of mind.  Hello! I'm Jay Thomas, a REALTOR in Houston, Texas.
