How to Winterize Your Home DIY - Quick List!
Keep this informational checklist for reference. Do know your coverage for burst pipes. This is According to Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). Hopefully, everything will be fine, but it is always better to check and double check.
- Wrap outdoor and indoor pipes in unheated areas (like a clothes washer in your garage)
- Remove water hoses and wrap outdoor pipes.
- Drain and turn off your lawn sprinkler system.
- Turn off the water to your clothes washer if it’s in an unheated garage
- Winterize windows by adding weather strips or caulking on the cracks
- If you leave your house before a freeze, turn off the water at the shutoff valve and leave your heat on
- Open cabinets under sinks to let your house’s heat warm the pipes
- Let faucets drip from the cold and hot taps or run water through your indoor faucets – hot and cold - before you go to sleep.
- Clean Out your Gutters : Gutters full of leaves and other debris can increase the likelihood of ice forming on your roof.
- Spray ice repellant on your front steps
- Check your fireplace and chimney
- Check your pipes periodically
- Run ceiling fans clockwise
