Named one of Houston s "Ten Most Important Houses" by Houstonia s architectural review, the Perforated House was created by Houston based architectural firm LOJO as the principle designer s personal residence. *
Within all the accolades and innovation is a home built for its site and its leafy Houston Heights neighborhood. The classic Texas vernacular of the dogtrot house, with living areas separated by a breezeway under a single roof, was an inspiration. **
The interior is perforated by 4 breezeways, which brighten and cool the interior as well as adding living space to this decidedly indoor/ outdoor house. *
Perforated metal cladding was used to shade and screen but permits views of the outside. *
Living room looking towards the front of the house. Beyond the wall of bookshelves and a few steps down is the den/ office in the front of the house. The stairs to the right lead to the third bedroom. *
Living room looking towards the back of the house and an upstairs breezeway. The stairs to the right lead to the master suite and to the second bedroom. *
Living room looking towards the north. Ram windows and Fleetwood front door, floor supply air conditioning for a clean look carried throughout*
The owner has said that he was interested in the "capacity of the breezeways to pull exterior space through the interior as it folds under and over the multiple breezeways" *
Dining room looking north. The home was designed to be both bright and cool, with abundant daylight but thermal buffer *
The kitchen is a few steps down from the living room *
Kitchen is styled with innovative Leicht cabinetry with fitted storage and overhead hinges. Zodiac quartz counters. Bosch 5 burner downdraft cooktop, oven, microwave, beverage cooler and dishwasher, Kitchenaid refrigerator *
Looking towards the vestibule --the powder bath (not pictured) is to the right of the chalkboard wall. powder bath features handmade Indian tiles and Alape sink. *
Again looking towards vestibule, with walk way to breezeway above *
Looking out towards the wooden deck. The raised deck divides the yard into 3 spaces including the most private beyond the deck. *
Local references abound in this house-- the ebony finish red oak floors were inspired by the Menil Collection s main building. *
Master bedroom.*
Master bathroom windows optimize natural light with complete privacy *
Master Bathroom *
Corridor on second floor. Each bedroom has ensuite bath *
Upstairs breezeway is open at one end for star gazing and accesses the roof *
Variations on the steel and wood used throughout *
The remarkable effect of the custom cladding was achieved by "corrugating" flat panels of perforated metal *
The house is cantilevered to protect the root system of the sycamore tree which gives the third bedroom its tree-house feeling *
Foundation is a modern evolution of pier and beam. The house rests on a chassis of steel beams, over a high well ventilated crawl space *
Looking towards the rear of the house. Two car garage accesses the alley, so no long driveway takes up space, although there is a landscaped permeable parking pad for guests *
As unique as it is, the scale of the Perforated House fits in with its neighborhood -- the trees and porches, bike paths and walkable pleasures of the Houston Heights *
For all its acclaim in Texas Architect, Houstonia, Interiors Texas, Paper City and more, the Perforated House is a welcoming home *

NO FLOODING HERE! One of Houston's most noted houses, the Perforated House is a modern take on the classic Texas dogtrot house, created around 4 breezeways that meld the indoor & outdoor spaces. Inside, a refreshingly contemporary layout strikes the perfect balance between shared and single spaces, including a seriously modern take on the traditional first-floor study and a third bedroom with private staircase. Within this innovative design is a family home both beautiful and comfortable
