Senior age starts at age 55 why? when majority of people in that age category are very strong and young?

Currently, the government considers an individual to be “retirement” age beginning at age 59 1/2. I have noticed that most businesses offer senior discounts beginning at ages 50 or 55. I am not sure where those ages came from. I don’t think it is intended to say that people of that age are not strong or young. I hope this helps. :)
