Affordable Housing Help

Why do Realtors do not want to help find Rentals when it comes to Section 8? I have asked several. Some ignored me, some said they will see what they can do and never get back to me and never answer me after that. I do pay my portion of the rent on time and have excellent rental history. People hear Section 8 and immediately do not want to help. Why?

  • * UPDATE * Thank you for your time and answers. I went with an apartment for now. That will give me a year to save for a down payment on a condo. Again Thank you. Hugs. - Feb 28, 2018

I would agree with Karen. Not all real estate agents do rentals. They can be very time consuming and Finding landords that will consider Sec 8 can be much more difficult. Not everyone will be willing to put in the work. What area are you looking for? If you are in or near the Cypress area I would be glad to help. A bulk of my business comes from Short sale or pre foreclosure listings, and as such there are many of my clients who in turn need rental housing with extreme difficulties in credit, income, bankruptcy's etc, all of which makes finding a landlord willing to consider their circumstances much more difficult.I would be happy to discuss if you are interested.

I cannot answer why. I can say in general rentals can be very time consuming, and often a Realtor may not have the time available to assist regardless if it is Section 8 or a typical rental. Since Harvey hit, there is even less inventory of rental housing and even fewer Section 8. It may be that they are not ignoring you, it might be that there simply are no homes. I would recommend using the HAR app and specifying in your search Section 8 and contacting the listing agents directly. This can be found when you select "more filters" and look under lease terms. Section 8 will then appear. Be aware that when I entered the Pasadena market for instance there are no rentals so it will depend on where you are looking. I feel for all renters. It is a brutal rental market out there! Best of luck.
