In 1906, timber barons and other distinguished Houstonians created Courtlandt Place, a development in close proximity to downtown. More than a century later, 16 historic homes along its treelined boulevard have been restored and registered through the National Register of Historic Places. No. 16, built in 1912, is in the Neo-Classical style with sweeping presentation.
The house was designed by its first owners J.J. and Lena Carter Carroll to be a monument to fine Texas hardwoods. Renowned architect Birdsall Briscoe enhanced the design years later. The current owners have been scrupulous in its care, preserving the original charm when renovating the upstairs, retaining Zuber wallpaper and Mansbendel fireplaces.

This classically detailed Doric portico over a one-story gallery dominates the main façade of the Carroll House and is the building's most distinguishing exterior feature.
