When we compared Yates High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Wheatley High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Yates High School’s regular student population is 929 with a student-teacher ratio of 17 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Wheatley High School is 740 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.2 students/teacher ratio.
Yates High School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 59 in student achievement, 70 in school progress and 61 in closing performance gaps. It scored 67 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Wheatley High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 68 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Wheatley High School's one out of seven distinction is in 25% closing performance gaps. Yates High School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Yates High School is African Americans who make up nearly 84.93% of student population, followed by Hispanics (12.70%), Whites or Caucasians (0.97%), Two or More Races (0.97%) and Asians (0.43%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Wheatley High School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 54.19% of student population, followed by Hispanics (44.73%), Whites or Caucasians (0.41%), Native Americans (0.41%), Asians (0.14%) and Two or More Races (0.14%).
Based on household incomes, Yates High School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 96.45% compared to 95.41% at Wheatley High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Yates High School has 47 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.06% of student population. Wheatley High School has significantly more ELLs at 144 or about 19.46% of student population.
In addition, Yates High School has 4.41% bilingual students, 3.44% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.68% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Wheatley High School with 15.81% bilingual students, 6.76% gifted and talented students and 18.65% students in the special education program.
Yates High School's 54 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 14 years. Wheatley High School's 52 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Yates High School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Wheatley High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
Yates High School has four special education teachers assisted by 7 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Wheatley High School has four special education teachers and 4 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
