As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Yates High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Westside High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Yates High School’s regular student population is 929 with a student-teacher ratio of 17 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Westside High School is 2,931 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.7 students/teacher ratio.
Yates High School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 59 in student achievement, 70 in school progress and 61 in closing performance gaps. It scored 67 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Westside High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 81 in student achievement, 84 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Westside High School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and 25% closing performance gaps. Yates High School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Yates High School is African Americans who make up nearly 84.93% of student population, followed by Hispanics (12.70%), Whites or Caucasians (0.97%), Two or More Races (0.97%) and Asians (0.43%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Westside High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 43.98%, followed by African Americans (32.28%), Whites or Caucasians (14.94%), Asians (6.24%), Two or More Races (1.91%) and Native Americans (0.41%).
Based on household incomes, Yates High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 96.45% compared to 64.31% at Westside High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Yates High School has 47 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.06% of student population. Westside High School has significantly more ELLs at 439 or about 14.98% of student population.
In addition, Yates High School has 4.41% bilingual students, 3.44% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.68% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Westside High School with 14.23% bilingual students, 25.93% gifted and talented students and 6.31% students in the special education program.
Yates High School's 54 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 14 years. Westside High School's 156 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 12.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Yates High School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Westside High School has seven teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 25 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 41 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 33 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 42 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Yates High School employs 33 female teachers and 21 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by seven teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs three staff members in the school administration department and 14 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Westside High School employs 84 female teachers and 72 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs two staff members in the school administration department and 15 more working as school support staff.
