When we compared Worthing High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Hcc Life Skills Program, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Worthing High School’s regular student population is 823 with a student-teacher ratio of 15.3 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Hcc Life Skills Program is 74 students and a student-teacher ratio of 4.1 students/teacher ratio.
Worthing High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for Hcc Life Skills Program due to the on-going impact from the COVID-19 pandemic.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Worthing High School and Hcc Life Skills Program are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Worthing High School is African Americans who make up nearly 69.02% of student population, followed by Hispanics (29.04%), Two or More Races (0.97%), Whites or Caucasians (0.61%), Asians (0.12%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
At Hcc Life Skills Program, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 55.41% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.78%), Whites or Caucasians (9.46%) and Asians (1.35%). There is no Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, Worthing High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 96.48% compared to 45.95% at Hcc Life Skills Program.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Worthing High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 13.61% of its student population compared to 5.41% at Hcc Life Skills Program.
Worthing High School 15.31% are in the special education program, 4.37% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 12.52% students. Hcc Life Skills Program has no gifted and talented student, while 100.00% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 2.70% students.
Worthing High School's 53 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 9.7 years. Hcc Life Skills Program's 18 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 12.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 17.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Worthing High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Hcc Life Skills Program has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Worthing High School employs 31 female teachers and 21 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs two staff members in the school administration department and 15 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Hcc Life Skills Program employs 13 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs two staff members in the school administration department.
