Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Wilson Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Armstrong Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wilson Middle School’s regular student population is 860 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Armstrong Middle School is 616 students and a 12.1 students/teacher ratio.
Wilson Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 82 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Armstrong Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Wilson Middle School's one out of seven distinction is in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA). Armstrong Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Wilson Middle School. They make up for 39.07% of student population, followed by Hispanics (33.26%), African Americans (17.09%), Two or More Races (5.00%), Asians (4.88%) and Native Americans (0.70%).
At Armstrong Middle School, Hispanics make up 66.23% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.10%), Whites or Caucasians (12.82%), Asians (3.57%) and Two or More Races (2.27%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Wilson Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 39.42% compared to 63.64% at Armstrong Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wilson Middle School has 158 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 18.37% of student population. Armstrong Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 270 or about 43.83% of student population.
Wilson Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 17.91%, gifted and talented students, 14.42%, while 16.16% are in the special education program. Armstrong Middle School bilingual students comprise 43.34%, gifted and talented students, 10.23%, and 16.40% are in the special education program.
Wilson Middle School's 60 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years. Teachers at Armstrong Middle School, numbering 50 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years.
