Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Willie Brown Academy, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, with Janet Brockett Elementary School, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Willie Brown Academy has a regular student population of 566 with a 14.7 students/teacher ratio while Janet Brockett Elementary School has 421 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.2 students/teacher ratio.
Willie Brown Academy earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Janet Brockett Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Willie Brown Academy and Janet Brockett Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Willie Brown Academy. They make up for 47.00% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.73%), Hispanics (18.20%), Asians (9.19%) and Two or More Races (6.54%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Janet Brockett Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 45.13%, followed by Hispanics (22.80%), Whites or Caucasians (14.25%), Asians (10.45%), Two or More Races (6.41%) and Native Americans (0.24%).
Based on household incomes, the Willie Brown Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 24.38% compared to 57.01% at Janet Brockett Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Willie Brown Academy has 65 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.48% of student population. Janet Brockett Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 92 or about 21.85% of student population.
Willie Brown Academy’s bilingual students comprise 11.31%, gifted and talented students, 3.18%, while 11.48% are in the special education program. Janet Brockett Elementary School bilingual students comprise 21.85%, gifted and talented students, 2.61%, and 11.40% are in the special education program.
38 teachers employed at Willie Brown Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.1 years. The 34 teachers at Janet Brockett Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Willie Brown Academy has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 14 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Janet Brockett Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
