Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Wilkerson Intermediate, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with McCullough Junior High School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wilkerson Intermediate’s regular student population is 790 with a 15.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at McCullough Junior High School is 2,084 students and a 18.2 students/teacher ratio.
Wilkerson Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 82 in student achievement, 81 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, McCullough Junior High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 94 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 92 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Wilkerson Intermediate’s only distinction designation is in Post-Secondary. McCullough Junior High School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, Social Studies and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Wilkerson Intermediate. They make up for 39.24% of student population, followed by Hispanics (37.09%), African Americans (14.05%), Asians (4.30%), Two or More Races (4.30%) and Native Americans (0.63%).
At McCullough Junior High School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 56.09% of student population, followed by Hispanics (25.67%), Asians (9.40%), African Americans (4.94%), Two or More Races (3.55%) and Native Americans (0.29%).
Based on household incomes, Wilkerson Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 49.37% compared to 11.71% at McCullough Junior High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wilkerson Intermediate has 158 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 20.00% of student population. McCullough Junior High School has more ELLs at 166 or about 7.97% of student population.
In addition, Wilkerson Intermediate has 19.24% bilingual students, 11.27% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.90% are in the special education program. This stacks up against McCullough Junior High School with 7.73% bilingual students, 19.77% gifted and talented students and 6.38% students in the special education program.
Wilkerson Intermediate's 49 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.7 years. Teachers at McCullough Junior High School, numbering 114 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 9.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wilkerson Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. McCullough Junior High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 24 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 30 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 27 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 27 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Wilkerson Intermediate there are 41 female teachers and eight male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At McCullough Junior High School there are 90 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 17 special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
