As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. When we compared Wheatley High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sharpstown International School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wheatley High School’s regular student population is 740 with a student-teacher ratio of 14.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Sharpstown International School is 1,304 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.1 students/teacher ratio.
Wheatley High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 68 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 78 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sharpstown International School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 89 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 86 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Wheatley High School earned one out of seven distinctions. Sharpstown International School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Wheatley High School. They make up for 54.19% of student population, followed by Hispanics (44.73%), Whites or Caucasians (0.41%), Native Americans (0.41%), Asians (0.14%) and Two or More Races (0.14%).
At Sharpstown International School, Hispanics make up 82.52% of student population, followed by Asians (8.51%), African Americans (6.44%), Whites or Caucasians (1.99%), Native Americans (0.23%) and Two or More Races (0.23%).
Based on household incomes, the Wheatley High School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 95.41% compared to 97.70% at Sharpstown International School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wheatley High School has 144 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 19.46% of student population. Sharpstown International School has significantly more ELLs at 359 or about 27.53% of student population.
In addition, Wheatley High School has 15.81% bilingual students, 6.76% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.65% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sharpstown International School with 26.99% bilingual students, 24.77% gifted and talented students and 6.44% students in the special education program.
Wheatley High School's 52 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.3 years. Sharpstown International School's 76 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wheatley High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Sharpstown International School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
Wheatley High School has four special education teachers assisted by 4 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Sharpstown International School has two special education teachers and 2 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
