Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Mark White Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy has a regular student population of 608 with a 16.4 students/teacher ratio while Mark White Elementary School has 650 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.7 students/teacher ratio.
Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Mark White Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Mark White Elementary School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy is Hispanics who make up nearly 67.43% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (16.78%), African Americans (10.53%), Asians (2.63%) and Two or More Races (2.63%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Mark White Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 40.77%, followed by African Americans (23.85%), Whites or Caucasians (19.85%), Asians (11.85%), Two or More Races (2.46%) and Native Americans (0.77%).
Based on household incomes, the Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 46.71% compared to 73.08% at Mark White Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy has 270 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 44.41% of student population. Mark White Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 330 or about 50.77% of student population.
Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy’s bilingual students comprise 96.05%, gifted and talented students, 24.84%, while 4.11% are in the special education program. Mark White Elementary School bilingual students comprise 63.85%, gifted and talented students, 6.31%, and 8.46% are in the special education program.
37 teachers employed at Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.2 years. The 41 teachers at Mark White Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Mark White Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy there are 31 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Mark White Elementary School there are 39 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
