Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Hines-Caldwell, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy has a regular student population of 608 with a 16.4 students/teacher ratio while Hines-Caldwell has 721 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18 students/teacher ratio.
Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Hines-Caldwell earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 74 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 84 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Hines-Caldwell did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy is Hispanics who make up nearly 67.43% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (16.78%), African Americans (10.53%), Asians (2.63%) and Two or More Races (2.63%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Hines-Caldwell, Hispanics make up 80.31% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.03%), Whites or Caucasians (0.83%), Asians (0.55%) and Two or More Races (0.28%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 46.71% compared to 92.79% at Hines-Caldwell.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy has 270 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 44.41% of student population. Hines-Caldwell has significantly more ELLs at 431 or about 59.78% of student population.
Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy’s bilingual students comprise 96.05%, gifted and talented students, 24.84%, while 4.11% are in the special education program. Hines-Caldwell bilingual students comprise 58.39%, gifted and talented students, 3.88%, and 7.49% are in the special education program.
37 teachers employed at Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.2 years. The 40 teachers at Hines-Caldwell have been serving the school for an average of 9.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Hines-Caldwell no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy there are 31 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Hines-Caldwell there are 34 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
