As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. Taking on their interests and passions help to shape the critical decisions they need to make as they plan their future.
When we compared Westside High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Soar Ctr, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Westside High School’s regular student population is 2,931 with a student-teacher ratio of 18.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Soar Ctr is 71 students and a student-teacher ratio of -2 students/teacher ratio.
Westside High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 81 in student achievement, 84 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for Soar Ctr due to the on-going impact from the COVID-19 pandemic.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Westside High School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and 25% closing performance gaps. Soar Ctr did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Westside High School. They make up for 43.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (32.28%), Whites or Caucasians (14.94%), Asians (6.24%), Two or More Races (1.91%) and Native Americans (0.41%).
The student population at Soar Ctr is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 45.07%, followed by Hispanics (38.03%), African Americans (12.68%), Asians (2.82%) and Two or More Races (1.41%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Westside High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 64.31% compared to 9.86% at Soar Ctr.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Westside High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 14.98% of its student population compared to 1.41% at Soar Ctr.
Westside High School’s bilingual students comprise 14.23%, gifted and talented students, 25.93%, while 6.31% are in the special education program. Soar Ctr bilingual students comprise 4.23%, gifted and talented students, 1.41%, and 77.46% are in the special education program.
Westside High School's 156 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 12.3 years. Soar Ctr's one teacher only has been working at the campus for an average of 8 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 13 years.
Of its teaching staff, Westside High School has seven teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 25 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 41 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 33 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 42 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Soar Ctr no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, no teacher serving the school for 20-30 years, one teacher only has worked for 11-20 years, school has no teacher serving 6-10 years, no teacher serving the school for 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Westside High School employs 84 female teachers and 72 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs two staff members in the school administration department and 15 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Soar Ctr has an all-female teaching staff. Of its teaching staff, one teacher is in special education without any assistance.
