When we compared West Briar Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Henry Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
West Briar Middle School’s regular student population is 1,117 with a 18.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Henry Middle School is 765 students and a 14.5 students/teacher ratio.
West Briar Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 83 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Henry Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 56 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 76 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
West Briar Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Henry Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at West Briar Middle School. They make up for 36.71% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.57%), Whites or Caucasians (18.89%), Asians (8.77%), Two or More Races (1.79%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
At Henry Middle School, Hispanics make up 87.97% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.67%), Whites or Caucasians (2.09%) and Two or More Races (0.26%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the West Briar Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 63.56% compared to 97.52% at Henry Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, West Briar Middle School has 197 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 17.64% of student population. Henry Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 369 or about 48.24% of student population.
West Briar Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 17.01%, gifted and talented students, 25.43%, while 6.62% are in the special education program. Henry Middle School bilingual students comprise 47.19%, gifted and talented students, 6.93%, and 16.21% are in the special education program.
