When we compared Waltrip High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Carnegie Vanguard High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Waltrip High School’s regular student population is 1,711 with a student-teacher ratio of 15.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Carnegie Vanguard High School is 913 students and a student-teacher ratio of 24.1 students/teacher ratio.
Waltrip High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Carnegie Vanguard High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 97 in student achievement, 98 in school progress, 96 in closing performance gaps and 97 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Waltrip High School’s only distinction designation is in Read/ELA. Carnegie Vanguard High School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Waltrip High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 77.09% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.67%), Whites or Caucasians (6.90%), Two or More Races (0.70%), Asians (0.41%) and Native Americans (0.23%).
The student population at Carnegie Vanguard High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 30.89%, followed by Asians (30.56%), Whites or Caucasians (22.02%), African Americans (11.61%), Two or More Races (4.16%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
Based on household incomes, Waltrip High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 77.09% compared to 35.05% at Carnegie Vanguard High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Waltrip High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.09% of its student population compared to 0.33% at Carnegie Vanguard High School.
Additionally, Waltrip High School has 20.98% bilingual students, 19.17% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.22% are in the special education program. Carnegie Vanguard High School’s bilingual students comprise 0.88% of student population while 0.77% are in the special education program. Carnegie Vanguard High School bested Waltrip High School in one area, with nearly 99.78% of its student population in the gifted and talented program.
Waltrip High School's 107 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 10.8 years. Carnegie Vanguard High School's 38 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 12 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 15.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Waltrip High School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 14 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 25 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 27 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 34 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Carnegie Vanguard High School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
Waltrip High School has three special education teachers assisted by 8 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Carnegie Vanguard High School has zero special education teachers and 0 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
