Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Vogel Intermediate, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Knox Junior High School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Vogel Intermediate’s regular student population is 959 with a 15 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Knox Junior High School is 1,378 students and a 18.1 students/teacher ratio.
Vogel Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 87 in student achievement, 87 in school progress and 94 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Knox Junior High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 89 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Vogel Intermediate's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Knox Junior High School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Vogel Intermediate. They make up for 41.40% of student population, followed by Hispanics (38.06%), African Americans (12.41%), Two or More Races (4.07%), Asians (2.71%) and Native Americans (0.83%).
The student population at Knox Junior High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 50.44%, followed by Hispanics (28.37%), African Americans (9.29%), Asians (6.53%), Two or More Races (4.50%) and Native Americans (0.58%).
Based on household incomes, Vogel Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 46.30% compared to 28.23% at Knox Junior High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Vogel Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 20.44% of its student population compared to 9.80% at Knox Junior High School.
In addition, Vogel Intermediate has 19.60% bilingual students, 8.24% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.35% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Knox Junior High School with 9.72% bilingual students, 15.46% gifted and talented students and 7.26% students in the special education program.
Vogel Intermediate's 64 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years. Teachers at Knox Junior High School, numbering 76 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 9.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Vogel Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Knox Junior High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 30 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Vogel Intermediate there are 59 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Knox Junior High School there are 53 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
