Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Twain Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Twain Elementary School has a regular student population of 851 with a 18.1 students/teacher ratio while Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr has 863 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.8 students/teacher ratio.
Twain Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 94 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 59 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Twain Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA). Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Twain Elementary School. They make up for 41.60% of student population, followed by Hispanics (22.44%), Asians (18.21%), African Americans (11.28%), Two or More Races (6.23%) and Native Americans (0.24%).
At Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr, Hispanics make up 73.12% of student population, followed by African Americans (25.38%), Whites or Caucasians (0.93%), Two or More Races (0.35%), Asians (0.12%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
Based on household incomes, the Twain Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 16.57% compared to 95.37% at Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Twain Elementary School has 132 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 15.51% of student population. Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr has significantly more ELLs at 483 or about 55.97% of student population.
Twain Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 26.79%, gifted and talented students, 34.08%, while 6.70% are in the special education program. Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr bilingual students comprise 57.01%, gifted and talented students, 3.94%, and 8.81% are in the special education program.
47 teachers employed at Twain Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.6 years. The 51 teachers at Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr have been serving the school for an average of 10.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Twain Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 16 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Twain Elementary School there are 41 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Reagan K-8 Educational Ctr there are 38 female teachers and 13 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
