Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Travis Middle School, which is a part of AMARILLO ISD, with Bowie 6th Grade Campus, which is a part of AMARILLO ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Travis Middle School’s regular student population is 652 with a 13 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Bowie 6th Grade Campus is 348 students and a 14.9 students/teacher ratio.
Travis Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 70 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 78 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Bowie 6th Grade Campus not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 67 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 30 in closing performance gaps and 63 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Travis Middle School and Bowie 6th Grade Campus are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Travis Middle School. They make up for 56.75% of student population, followed by African Americans (16.56%), Asians (15.64%), Whites or Caucasians (9.05%), Two or More Races (1.38%) and Native Americans (0.31%).
At Bowie 6th Grade Campus, Hispanics make up 81.90% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (9.77%), African Americans (5.17%), Two or More Races (1.72%), Native Americans (0.86%) and Asians (0.57%).
Based on household incomes, the Travis Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 87.58% compared to 88.51% at Bowie 6th Grade Campus.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Travis Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 37.73% of its student population compared to 26.72% at Bowie 6th Grade Campus.
In addition, Travis Middle School has 37.73% bilingual students, 4.14% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.96% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Bowie 6th Grade Campus with 24.14% bilingual students, 6.90% gifted and talented students and 17.24% students in the special education program.
Travis Middle School's 50 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 4.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.1 years. Teachers at Bowie 6th Grade Campus, numbering 23 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Travis Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, six teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 28 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Bowie 6th Grade Campus has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Travis Middle School there are 35 female teachers and 15 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Bowie 6th Grade Campus there are 19 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
