Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Travis Intermediate, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Vogel Intermediate, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Travis Intermediate’s regular student population is 596 with a 13.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Vogel Intermediate is 959 students and a 15 students/teacher ratio.
Travis Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 82 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Vogel Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 87 in student achievement, 87 in school progress, 94 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Travis Intermediate’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary. Vogel Intermediate's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Travis Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 76.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (13.26%), Whites or Caucasians (7.55%), Two or More Races (1.68%), Native Americans (0.50%) and Asians (0.34%).
The student population at Vogel Intermediate is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 41.40%, followed by Hispanics (38.06%), African Americans (12.41%), Two or More Races (4.07%), Asians (2.71%) and Native Americans (0.83%).
Based on household incomes, Travis Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 92.11% compared to 46.30% at Vogel Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Travis Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 57.72% of its student population compared to 20.44% at Vogel Intermediate.
In addition, Travis Intermediate has 57.89% bilingual students, 2.35% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.94% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Vogel Intermediate with 19.60% bilingual students, 8.24% gifted and talented students and 13.35% students in the special education program.
Travis Intermediate's 44 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years. Teachers at Vogel Intermediate, numbering 64 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Travis Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Vogel Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Travis Intermediate there are 38 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
At Vogel Intermediate there are 59 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
