Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Travis Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Gallegos Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Travis Elementary School has a regular student population of 698 with a 17.5 students/teacher ratio while Gallegos Elementary School has 333 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.3 students/teacher ratio.
Travis Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Travis Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Gallegos Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Travis Elementary School. They make up for 57.31% of student population, followed by Hispanics (30.37%), Two or More Races (6.30%), African Americans (3.15%), Asians (2.72%) and Native Americans (0.14%).
At Gallegos Elementary School, Hispanics make up 97.00% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.70%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.30%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Travis Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 15.04% compared to 97.90% at Gallegos Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Travis Elementary School has 22 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.15% of student population. Gallegos Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 165 or about 49.55% of student population.
Travis Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 2.87%, gifted and talented students, 46.99%, while 7.88% are in the special education program. Gallegos Elementary School bilingual students comprise 45.65%, gifted and talented students, 7.81%, and 13.51% are in the special education program.
