Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Tough Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Creighton Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Tough Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,007 with a 16.8 students/teacher ratio while Creighton Elementary School has 837 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.3 students/teacher ratio.
Tough Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 95 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Creighton Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 71 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Tough Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Creighton Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Post-Secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Tough Elementary School. They make up for 54.62% of student population, followed by Hispanics (22.05%), Asians (15.09%), Two or More Races (5.26%), African Americans (2.78%) and Native Americans (0.10%).
At Creighton Elementary School, Hispanics make up 74.19% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (21.27%), African Americans (2.39%), Two or More Races (1.08%), Native Americans (0.96%) and Asians (0.12%).
Based on household incomes, the Tough Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 6.75% compared to 88.17% at Creighton Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tough Elementary School has 139 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 13.80% of student population. Creighton Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 484 or about 57.83% of student population.
Tough Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 13.41%, gifted and talented students, 17.28%, while 5.06% are in the special education program. Creighton Elementary School bilingual students comprise 58.54%, gifted and talented students, 1.91%, and 12.43% are in the special education program.
59 teachers employed at Tough Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.6 years. The 51 teachers at Creighton Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Tough Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 20 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Creighton Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Tough Elementary School there are 57 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Creighton Elementary School there are 50 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
