Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Tinsley Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Travis Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Tinsley Elementary School has a regular student population of 613 with a 17.9 students/teacher ratio while Travis Elementary School has 698 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.5 students/teacher ratio.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Travis Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Tinsley Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Tinsley Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 89.72% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.46%), Whites or Caucasians (0.49%), Asians (0.16%) and Two or More Races (0.16%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Travis Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 57.31% of student population, followed by Hispanics (30.37%), Two or More Races (6.30%), African Americans (3.15%), Asians (2.72%) and Native Americans (0.14%).
Based on household incomes, Tinsley Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 99.02% compared to 15.04% at Travis Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tinsley Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 85.32% of its student population compared to 3.15% at Travis Elementary School.
In addition, Tinsley Elementary School has 84.99% bilingual students, 7.34% are in the gifted and talented program, while 5.71% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Travis Elementary School with 2.87% bilingual students, 46.99% gifted and talented students and 7.88% students in the special education program.
