Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Ketelsen Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Tinsley Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Tinsley Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 89.72% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.46%), Whites or Caucasians (0.49%), Asians (0.16%) and Two or More Races (0.16%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Ketelsen Elementary School, Hispanics make up 95.25% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.10%), Whites or Caucasians (1.03%), Asians (0.21%), Native Americans (0.21%) and Two or More Races (0.21%).
Based on household incomes, Tinsley Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 99.02% compared to 95.25% at Ketelsen Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tinsley Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 85.32% of its student population compared to 43.60% at Ketelsen Elementary School.
In addition, Tinsley Elementary School has 84.99% bilingual students, 7.34% are in the gifted and talented program, while 5.71% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Ketelsen Elementary School with 40.91% bilingual students, 11.16% gifted and talented students and 9.71% students in the special education program.
