Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Thornwood Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, with Spring Branch Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Thornwood Elementary School has a regular student population of 389 with a 12.8 students/teacher ratio while Spring Branch Elementary School has 523 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.8 students/teacher ratio.
Thornwood Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 70 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Spring Branch Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Thornwood Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Thornwood Elementary School. They make up for 45.76% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.16%), Whites or Caucasians (11.57%), Two or More Races (5.14%), Asians (4.11%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
At Spring Branch Elementary School, Hispanics make up 89.87% of student population, followed by African Americans (5.54%), Whites or Caucasians (3.06%), Two or More Races (0.76%), Asians (0.38%) and Native Americans (0.38%).
Based on household incomes, the Thornwood Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 89.20% compared to 94.46% at Spring Branch Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Thornwood Elementary School has 159 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 40.87% of student population. Spring Branch Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 360 or about 68.83% of student population.
Thornwood Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 40.87%, gifted and talented students, 4.37%, while 10.80% are in the special education program. Spring Branch Elementary School bilingual students comprise 68.45%, gifted and talented students, 2.49%, and 11.47% are in the special education program.

The 37 teachers at Spring Branch Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Thornwood Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
