Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Thornwood Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, with Bunker Hill Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Thornwood Elementary School has a regular student population of 389 with a 12.8 students/teacher ratio while Bunker Hill Elementary School has 667 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.1 students/teacher ratio.
Thornwood Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 70 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. On the other hand, Bunker Hill Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 89 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Thornwood Elementary School and Bunker Hill Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Thornwood Elementary School. They make up for 45.76% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.16%), Whites or Caucasians (11.57%), Two or More Races (5.14%), Asians (4.11%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
The student population at Bunker Hill Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 48.43%, followed by Asians (25.34%), Hispanics (17.69%), Two or More Races (4.65%), African Americans (3.75%) and Native Americans (0.15%).
Based on household incomes, Thornwood Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 89.20% compared to 15.89% at Bunker Hill Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Thornwood Elementary School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 40.87% of its student population compared to 21.14% at Bunker Hill Elementary School.
In addition, Thornwood Elementary School has 40.87% bilingual students, 4.37% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.80% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Bunker Hill Elementary School with 20.69% bilingual students, 13.79% gifted and talented students and 8.55% students in the special education program.
