Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Terrace Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, with Sherwood Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Terrace Elementary School has a regular student population of 377 with a 14.5 students/teacher ratio while Sherwood Elementary School has 426 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.9 students/teacher ratio.
Terrace Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sherwood Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Terrace Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Sherwood Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Terrace Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 71.62% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (16.18%), Asians (5.84%), African Americans (5.04%), Two or More Races (1.06%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
At Sherwood Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 65.96% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (16.43%), African Americans (11.27%), Two or More Races (3.99%), Asians (1.88%) and Native Americans (0.23%).
Based on household incomes, Terrace Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 78.78% compared to 65.02% at Sherwood Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Terrace Elementary School has 151 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 40.05% of student population. Sherwood Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 204 or about 47.89% of student population.
In addition, Terrace Elementary School has 40.32% bilingual students, 4.77% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.18% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sherwood Elementary School with 69.95% bilingual students, 5.63% gifted and talented students and 12.91% students in the special education program.
