Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Sutton Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Young Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Sutton Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,008 with a 17.5 students/teacher ratio while Young Elementary School has 366 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.6 students/teacher ratio.
Sutton Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Young Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 59 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Sutton Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and with 25% student progress. Young Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Sutton Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 73.12% of student population, followed by Asians (11.31%), African Americans (8.93%), Whites or Caucasians (5.56%), Two or More Races (0.79%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
At Young Elementary School, African Americans make up 81.97% of student population, followed by Hispanics (15.57%), Whites or Caucasians (1.91%) and Two or More Races (0.55%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Sutton Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 94.84% compared to 96.17% at Young Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sutton Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 73.91% of its student population compared to 2.73% at Young Elementary School.
Sutton Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 73.02%, gifted and talented students, 6.25%, while 8.04% are in the special education program. Young Elementary School bilingual students comprise 3.01%, gifted and talented students, 1.09%, and 8.47% are in the special education program.
57 teachers employed at Sutton Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.4 years. The 22 teachers at Young Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Sutton Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 18 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Young Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, one teacher only has worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
