Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Spring Shadows Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, with Bendwood School, which is a part of SPRING BRANCH ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Spring Shadows Elementary School has a regular student population of 617 with a 14.4 students/teacher ratio while Bendwood School has 33 students and a student-teacher ratio of 2.1 students/teacher ratio.
Spring Shadows Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 62 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. Spring Shadows Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and 25% closing performance gaps. Bendwood School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Spring Shadows Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 80.06% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.26%), Whites or Caucasians (3.89%), Two or More Races (1.46%) and Asians (0.32%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Bendwood School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 57.58% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (27.27%), African Americans (6.06%), Asians (6.06%) and Two or More Races (3.03%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Spring Shadows Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 94.17% compared to 69.70% at Bendwood School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Spring Shadows Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 60.78% of its student population compared to 33.33% at Bendwood School.
Spring Shadows Elementary School 15.07% are in the special education program, 1.62% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 60.62% students. Bendwood School has no gifted and talented student, while 100.00% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 33.33% students.
42 teachers employed at Spring Shadows Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 3.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.8 years. The 15 teachers at Bendwood School have been serving the school for an average of 12.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 16.1 years.
