Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Sorters Mill Elementary School, which is a part of NEW CANEY ISD, with Dogwood Elementary School, which is a part of NEW CANEY ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Sorters Mill Elementary School has a regular student population of 673 with a 14.8 students/teacher ratio while Dogwood Elementary School has 705 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14 students/teacher ratio.
Sorters Mill Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Dogwood Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 62 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Sorters Mill Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Dogwood Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Sorters Mill Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 70.43% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.77%), African Americans (2.97%), Two or More Races (1.93%), Asians (0.74%) and Native Americans (0.15%).
At Dogwood Elementary School, Hispanics make up 82.55% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (15.74%), Two or More Races (0.71%), Native Americans (0.57%), African Americans (0.28%) and Asians (0.14%).
Based on household incomes, the Sorters Mill Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 71.32% compared to 85.82% at Dogwood Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sorters Mill Elementary School has 331 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 49.18% of student population. Dogwood Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 497 or about 70.50% of student population.
Sorters Mill Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 56.76%, gifted and talented students, 5.05%, while 11.44% are in the special education program. Dogwood Elementary School bilingual students comprise 74.75%, gifted and talented students, 3.55%, and 12.34% are in the special education program.
45 teachers employed at Sorters Mill Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 3.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.8 years. The 50 teachers at Dogwood Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 3.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Sorters Mill Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
