Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Smithfield Middle School, which is a part of BIRDVILLE ISD, with Haltom Middle School, which is a part of BIRDVILLE ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Smithfield Middle School’s regular student population is 826 with a 16.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Haltom Middle School is 1,002 students and a 15.5 students/teacher ratio.
Smithfield Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Haltom Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 74 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Smithfield Middle School bagged all seven distinction awards in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Haltom Middle School’s only distinction designation is in Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Smithfield Middle School is Whites or Caucasians who make up nearly 66.59% of student population, followed by Hispanics (18.52%), African Americans (6.17%), Asians (4.84%), Two or More Races (3.27%) and Native Americans (0.48%).
At Haltom Middle School, Hispanics make up 77.94% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (12.28%), Asians (4.89%), African Americans (3.39%), Two or More Races (1.30%) and Native Americans (0.10%).
Based on household incomes, the Smithfield Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 25.18% compared to 81.64% at Haltom Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Smithfield Middle School has 50 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 6.05% of student population. Haltom Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 446 or about 44.51% of student population.
Smithfield Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 5.93%, gifted and talented students, 18.89%, while 9.56% are in the special education program. Haltom Middle School bilingual students comprise 44.01%, gifted and talented students, 4.59%, and 10.48% are in the special education program.
