Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Smith Elementary School, which is a part of CORPUS CHRISTI ISD, with Calk-Wilson Elementary School, which is a part of CORPUS CHRISTI ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Smith Elementary School has a regular student population of 486 with a 15 students/teacher ratio while Calk-Wilson Elementary School has 700 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.3 students/teacher ratio.
Smith Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Smith Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Calk-Wilson Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Post-Secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Smith Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 83.13% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (8.44%), African Americans (4.32%), Two or More Races (2.26%), Asians (1.03%) and Native Americans (0.21%).
At Calk-Wilson Elementary School, Hispanics make up 85.14% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (10.71%), African Americans (2.57%), Two or More Races (1.43%) and Asians (0.14%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Smith Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 84.36% compared to 85.29% at Calk-Wilson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Smith Elementary School has 20 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.12% of student population. Calk-Wilson Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 40 or about 5.71% of student population.
Smith Elementary School has no gifted and talented student, while 15.02% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 3.50% students.
