Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Smith Elementary School, which is a part of LAMAR CISD, with Beasley Elementary School, which is a part of LAMAR CISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Smith Elementary School has a regular student population of 345 with a 11.5 students/teacher ratio while Beasley Elementary School has 414 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.3 students/teacher ratio.
Smith Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Smith Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Beasley Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Smith Elementary School. They make up for 65.80% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.26%), Whites or Caucasians (13.33%), Two or More Races (2.32%) and Asians (0.29%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Beasley Elementary School, Hispanics make up 80.92% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (9.66%), African Americans (7.97%), Two or More Races (1.21%) and Asians (0.24%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Smith Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 84.06% compared to 88.41% at Beasley Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Smith Elementary School has 104 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 30.14% of student population. Beasley Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 206 or about 49.76% of student population.
Smith Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 30.14%, gifted and talented students, 6.09%, while 18.26% are in the special education program. Beasley Elementary School bilingual students comprise 49.28%, gifted and talented students, 5.31%, and 11.84% are in the special education program.
30 teachers employed at Smith Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.7 years. The 33 teachers at Beasley Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years.
