Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Sinclair Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Rodriguez Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Sinclair Elementary School has a regular student population of 627 with a 16.7 students/teacher ratio while Rodriguez Elementary School has 934 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.6 students/teacher ratio.
Sinclair Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 96 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Rodriguez Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 64 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 84 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Sinclair Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Rodriguez Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Sinclair Elementary School. They make up for 40.67% of student population, followed by Hispanics (38.60%), African Americans (11.32%), Asians (4.31%), Two or More Races (4.15%) and Native Americans (0.32%).
At Rodriguez Elementary School, Hispanics make up 85.87% of student population, followed by African Americans (8.46%), Asians (4.82%), Whites or Caucasians (0.64%) and Native Americans (0.11%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Sinclair Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 35.89% compared to 99.04% at Rodriguez Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sinclair Elementary School has 30 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.78% of student population. Rodriguez Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 776 or about 83.08% of student population.
Sinclair Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 6.54%, gifted and talented students, 25.36%, while 9.89% are in the special education program. Rodriguez Elementary School bilingual students comprise 82.66%, gifted and talented students, 4.93%, and 7.28% are in the special education program.
37 teachers employed at Sinclair Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.6 years. The 53 teachers at Rodriguez Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Sinclair Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Rodriguez Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Sinclair Elementary School there are 30 female teachers and seven male teachers.
