Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Shepard Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Forman Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Shepard Elementary School has a regular student population of 400 with a 11.7 students/teacher ratio while Forman Elementary School has 547 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.6 students/teacher ratio.
Shepard Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 88 in student achievement, 70 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Forman Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Shepard Elementary School and Forman Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Shepard Elementary School. They make up for 63.00% of student population, followed by Hispanics (13.75%), Asians (9.25%), Two or More Races (7.50%), African Americans (6.25%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
At Forman Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 60.51% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.83%), Whites or Caucasians (11.33%), Asians (6.40%), Two or More Races (2.74%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
Based on household incomes, the Shepard Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 23.75% compared to 71.66% at Forman Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Shepard Elementary School has 28 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 7.00% of student population. Forman Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 310 or about 56.67% of student population.
Shepard Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 7.25%, gifted and talented students, 10.75%, while 12.00% are in the special education program. Forman Elementary School bilingual students comprise 56.49%, gifted and talented students, 3.66%, and 16.45% are in the special education program.
