Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Shearn Elementary School and Port Houston Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Shearn Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 72.41% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.41%), Asians (2.80%), Whites or Caucasians (1.94%) and Two or More Races (0.43%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Port Houston Elementary School, Hispanics make up 95.13% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (2.62%), African Americans (1.87%) and Native Americans (0.37%). There is no Asians and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.

In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Shearn Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 56.03% of its student population compared to 70.79% at Port Houston Elementary School.
In addition, Shearn Elementary School has 63.58% bilingual students, 1.51% are in the gifted and talented program, while 3.88% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Port Houston Elementary School with 70.79% bilingual students, 10.11% gifted and talented students and 7.87% students in the special education program.
