Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Shadowbriar Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Blackshear Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Shadowbriar Elementary School has a regular student population of 521 with a 17.9 students/teacher ratio while Blackshear Elementary School has 289 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.1 students/teacher ratio.
Shadowbriar Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 64 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Shadowbriar Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science. Blackshear Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Shadowbriar Elementary School. They make up for 62.76% of student population, followed by Hispanics (26.87%), Whites or Caucasians (5.18%), Asians (2.30%), Two or More Races (2.11%) and Native Americans (0.77%).
At Blackshear Elementary School, African Americans make up 87.20% of student population, followed by Hispanics (10.38%), Whites or Caucasians (1.73%) and Two or More Races (0.69%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Shadowbriar Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 81.57% compared to 99.65% at Blackshear Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Shadowbriar Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 10.56% of its student population compared to 5.19% at Blackshear Elementary School.
Shadowbriar Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 9.60%, gifted and talented students, 2.11%, while 9.21% are in the special education program. Blackshear Elementary School bilingual students comprise 5.19%, gifted and talented students, 1.04%, and 8.30% are in the special education program.
