Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Seguin Elementary School, which is a part of WEATHERFORD ISD, with Ikard Elementary School, which is a part of WEATHERFORD ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Seguin Elementary School has a regular student population of 541 with a 11.6 students/teacher ratio while Ikard Elementary School has 598 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.6 students/teacher ratio.
Seguin Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 78 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 89 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Ikard Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Seguin Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Ikard Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Seguin Elementary School. They make up for 53.79% of student population, followed by Hispanics (40.48%), Two or More Races (2.59%), African Americans (1.66%), Native Americans (1.29%) and Asians (0.18%).
The student population at Ikard Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 46.32%, followed by Hispanics (43.98%), Two or More Races (4.85%), African Americans (3.34%), Asians (0.84%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, the Seguin Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 63.40% compared to 70.90% at Ikard Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Seguin Elementary School has 79 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 14.60% of student population. Ikard Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 139 or about 23.24% of student population.
Seguin Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 14.97%, gifted and talented students, 4.07%, while 25.14% are in the special education program. Ikard Elementary School bilingual students comprise 23.08%, gifted and talented students, 2.51%, and 14.88% are in the special education program.

The 43 teachers at Ikard Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Seguin Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Ikard Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Seguin Elementary School there are 45 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 24 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
