Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Schanen Estates Elementary School, which is a part of CORPUS CHRISTI ISD, with Kolda Elementary School, which is a part of CORPUS CHRISTI ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Schanen Estates Elementary School has a regular student population of 370 with a 13 students/teacher ratio while Kolda Elementary School has 859 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.5 students/teacher ratio.
Schanen Estates Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 70 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Schanen Estates Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Kolda Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Schanen Estates Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 82.97% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (11.35%), African Americans (4.05%), Native Americans (0.54%) and Two or More Races (0.54%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Kolda Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 64.84% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.86%), Asians (4.77%), African Americans (3.03%), Two or More Races (3.03%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
Based on household incomes, Schanen Estates Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 85.41% compared to 37.83% at Kolda Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Schanen Estates Elementary School has 14 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.78% of student population. Kolda Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 44 or about 5.12% of student population.
Schanen Estates Elementary School has no gifted and talented student, while 17.30% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 2.70% students.
