A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Roach Middle School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Social Studies and with 25% student progress. Fowler Middle School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Roach Middle School. They make up for 33.48% of student population, followed by Asians (33.15%), African Americans (14.64%), Hispanics (12.27%), Two or More Races (5.38%) and Native Americans (1.08%).
At Fowler Middle School, Asians are the biggest group, comprising 64.69% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (16.10%), African Americans (7.58%), Hispanics (7.17%), Two or More Races (3.32%) and Native Americans (1.14%).
Based on household incomes, Roach Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 15.61% compared to 10.07% at Fowler Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Roach Middle School has 26 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 2.80% of student population. Fowler Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 54 or about 5.61% of student population.
In addition, Roach Middle School has 2.80% bilingual students, 14.42% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.47% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Fowler Middle School with 5.50% bilingual students, 26.58% gifted and talented students and 7.17% students in the special education program.
