Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Stevens Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice has a regular student population of 1,062 with a 17.1 students/teacher ratio while Stevens Elementary School has 551 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.6 students/teacher ratio.
Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Stevens Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice. They make up for 45.86% of student population, followed by Hispanics (45.29%), Asians (3.95%), Whites or Caucasians (3.11%) and Two or More Races (1.69%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Stevens Elementary School, Hispanics make up 80.22% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (9.44%), African Americans (9.07%), Two or More Races (0.91%) and Asians (0.18%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 69.59% compared to 89.66% at Stevens Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.98% of its student population compared to 41.38% at Stevens Elementary School.
Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice’s bilingual students comprise 21.47%, gifted and talented students, 22.79%, while 8.57% are in the special education program. Stevens Elementary School bilingual students comprise 40.29%, gifted and talented students, 3.81%, and 7.80% are in the special education program.
